Here are a few simple guidelines to protect and prolong the life of your display.
Cleaning the notetaker surface: You may clean the surface with a soft lint free cloth dampened
with isopropyl alcohol; no other cleaning agent should be used. Follow these steps:
Raise all the dots.
On a Braille Lite 40, open the clipboard and press dot 7 until all pins are raised. You will
have to do this 40 times.
On the 18-cell Braille Lite, open the clipboard, and do the following sequence of commands:
dots 4,5-chord, dots 3,5-chord, the computer-Braille number 255, echord, e-chord. Then press
the advance bar to the left once.
With all of the dots raised, gently wipe across the display with your moistened cloth. Then
lower the dot by pressing the space bar until the display is clear.
It may be necessary to repeat this procedure 5 or 6 times to clean your display properly.
We recommend that you clean your display on a regular basis, perhaps once a month.
If at any time this cleaning procedure does not work, stop and call us at Freedom Scientific
Hardware Technical Support at (727) 803-8600, between 8:30AM and 8PM, EST, Monday through Friday.
Keep the Braille Lite in its case or under a protective cover when it is not in use. This will
protect the display from dust.
Do not place heavy objects on the unit.
Keep unit well away from food, beverages and other substances, which can clog the display.
The pins, or pegs, which serve as dots must be able to extend and retract freely through very
small openings in the cell caps.
Avoid placing the Braille Lite in direct sunlight for long periods of time. Long exposure to
heat can cause severe damage to the cells. DO NOT attempt to repair the display. Please contact Freedom Scientific to arrange for display
repair.
PLEASE NOTE: A qualified technician must do any repair of the Braille display. There are a number
of components in the display, which can be easily damaged by persons not trained in proper handling
procedures. No effort should be made by the customer to repair the display by using sharp objects
or cleaning agents. The display should never be taken apart. It takes extremely high voltages
to drive the display, which presents a significant shock hazard. If a Braille Lite is dropped,
dislodging pins or cell caps, please call Freedom Scientific to arrange to send the unit in for
repair. Please do not attempt to reinsert the pins. Simply include any dislodged parts in the
package with the Braille Lite when you send it to us for repair.
Warranty:
Freedom Scientific's one-year warranty guarantees replacement of any unit found to have factory
defect or software malfunction. However, cell replacement because of accidental damage by the
customer is not covered by the warranty.
Product Maintenance Agreement (Service Contract): This yearly renewable service contract does not cover replacement of cells damaged by the customer.
Cell replacement is done only when the display has deteriorated through long-term use of at
least two years.
Flat Rate Repair: Cell replacement is not covered by the flat rate repair charge except when the display has
deteriorated through long-term use of at least two years.
